Dawn of Discovery Wii Review. Share. Finally, a great third- party strategy title for the Wii. By Joshua Clark High- quality strategy titles on the Nintendo Wii have been hard to come by as of late. The Wii. Ware platform has produced a few hits in the form of World of Goo and the recent Swords and Soldiers, but a vast majority of retail releases have failed to properly strike that subtle balance between the accessibility and depth necessary to craft a quality title for the home audience. At least, they have until now, thanks to the recent release of Ubisoft's new city- building simulator Dawn of Discovery for everyone's favorite Nintendo home console. Borne of the Anno franchise of PC city- building simulators, Dawn of Discovery essentially pits players in the role of a fifteenth century city planner tasked with colonizing a series of islands in an effort to stave off drought and famine. The game's success can be largely attributed to Keen Entertainment and Blue Byte Software's willingness to make some drastic changes to the original title's core formula, streamlining the city- building mechanics while simultaneously overhauling the art direction to better match the Wii's family- friendly demographic. The result is a surprisingly well- crafted, console- specific strategy game in the vein of last summer's Xbox 3. Playstation 3 hit Civilization Revolution. Wipe that smug look off your face, pal. The first thing you'll notice as you begin a new game of Dawn of Discovery will inevitably be the title's gorgeous visuals. Intelligently deviating from the PC version's photo- realistic design, Dawn of Discovery for the Wii opts for a more stylized, cartoony approach. Dawn of Discovery Review It's complex and daunting, but this rich game of exploring, city building, and trading is also tremendously captivating. Wii Dawn Of Discovery Repack GamesBright colors and chipper animations make for some beautiful scenes and even streamline city management by distinguishing different buildings from one another in a single glance. Little touches like the physics- governed swaying of buildings as they hover over your city before placement give the title its visual polish, ensuring a consistent charm and high level of production from beginning to end. This is one of those rare games that is just a joy to watch unfold, and the team at Keen and Blue Byte deserve a huge amount of credit for their fresh, Wii- appropriate take on the PC franchise's photo- realism. Wii Dawn Of Discovery Repack WheelThe second thing you'll notice will be the high production values of Dawn of Discovery's Story Mode. Fully voiced dialogue atop a motion comic art style lends the single- player story more narrative weight than many of the top tier Wii titles already available on the platform. The only real complaint I can level at the title's presentation, aside from the rigid and limited set of settler animations, is that the in- game text can at times be a bit difficult to make out, though it never reaches the point of becoming entirely illegible. This trivial issue never derails the experience, even considering how much text you'll hear spoken or read through throughout the length of the single- player campaign. Dawn of Discovery's Story Mode is split into seven chapters, with each chapter containing its own set of individual parts. There's a lot of content within each chapter, ensuring a full playtime of around 1. Continuous Play mode. The great part of Dawn of Discovery's Story Mode is how it so seamlessly acts as the game's (extremely exhaustive) tutorial, introducing new mechanics and strategy elements up until the final chapters, deftly building upon past lessons and objectives until the player is fully versed in every aspect of the title's overall mechanics. By the end of the campaign, you'll have settled countless new colonies across innumerable islands of varying degrees of fertility, gathered and refined hundreds of thousands of natural resources and attracted an entire nation of industrious settlers to pay taxes and keep trade afloat. It's a refreshingly deep system to manage effectively, but never feels overwhelming thanks to the slow introduction of new mechanics. All praise aside, the single- player Story Mode isn't without its flaws, a few of which are substantial enough to keep the game from matching the quality of upper echelon Wii titles. One of the biggest annoyances stems from the Story Mode's pacing, perfect for slowly introducing new elements but also equally frustrating thanks to artificial restrictions placed upon city level advancement. Several times throughout the single- player campaign, you'll be forced to sit and wait as resource stockpiles slowly build, unable to strategically use the surplus time simply because the game isn't ready to let you evolve your colony at that particular point in time. Most of the time, this artificial restriction translates simply to lost time, though there are points when constrained technology trees make dealing with enemies (especially the corsair ships encountered early on when players still don't have access to combat- ready units) an extremely tedious and repetitive task. To be clear, none of the annoying issues found within Dawn of Discovery are enough to keep the game from being an extremely entertaining experience, but they do keep the title from landing amongst the small handful of must- own Wii experiences.
